September 2018

           Sunday August 5th saw Bristol St Andrews playing Yate & District in the final of the Clarence Davey Plate.Trailing in the early stages of the game, the Saints managed to gain advantage on 3 of the four rinks and to win the matchby 19 shots 89 shots to 70.

           Tuesday August 7th saw Bristol St Andrews playing Greenbank in the Semi Final of the Gloucestershire County Cup at Derby Road. The Saints winning the game by 64 shots to 43. They then progress to the Bristol Section Final where they would play Olveston BC at Henleaze BC on Tuesday, August 14th  The winners would then represent the Bristol section in the Gloucestershire section finals. Unfortunately the Saints lost in the final by 74 shots to 48.

          Having already played each other on the following Thursday in the Bristol & District league, the sides were to meet again on the following Sunday in the final of the Gloucester Bowling Association Two Rink Competition. Although this was again to result in defeat for the Saints, the game was very close and wasn't decided on either rink until the very last end of the game !  

           A week later and it was another final -  the Final of the B&D League Cup - The Lloyd Trophy. In very wet conditions and with constant rain falling throughout, our side played local rivals Ardagh. But it was the Ardagh (who on Thursday had themselves sealed promotion from Division Two) who adapted to the weather conditions and came out victorious.   The final league games of the 2018 season were also played in August and it saw Bristol St Andrews B & D side finish Runners Up to GB Brittons and the North East side finish Champions of Division Two.

        Our congratulations also go to our very own Jason Sparkes who became Gloucestershire Bowling Associations "'Champion of Champion on Sunday September 1st. With the Semi Finals and Final being played on the same day at Cam Mills Bowling Club, Jason beat former National Singles winner Lee Williamson 21 shots to 3 in the semi final and then beat Mike Prosser of Gloucester Spa in the final by 21 shots to 12.

Clarence Davey Plate Semi Final - Sunday July 29th

Bristol St Andrews 86  Avonmouth 67 

Due to the green at Bristol being unplayable this game was switched to the Avonmouth green 30 minutes before the scheduled start. In a closely fought match it was Bristol St Andrews who won the game and will now return to Avonmouth again next Sunday (August 5th @ 10.00am) for the final of the 2018 City & County of Bristol Bowling Association Clarence Davey Plate against Yate & District the current holders of the Clarence Davey Cup.

Avonmouth Open Four Tournament - Saturday July 28th 2018

Congratulations go to 2 Bristol St Andrews rinks that fought out the final of this years Avonmouth Tournament. Having both remained unbeaten in their section group games, they met in a closely fought out 8 End final and with the scores locked at 7 -7 after 7 ends, it was the rink of Trevor Wheeler, John Golding, Ron Maker and Adrian Dunford that collected the trophy & £150 in prize money. The Runners up rink of Spencer Wintle, Trevor Wilkins, Glen Wintle & Simon Wilkins collected prize money of £100.

News from our League sides

Bristol & District League - Division One

Bristol St Andrews are continuing to enjoy their fine season in the B&D league. Julys results started with a loss against Yate by only one shot (49 - 50) which gave them only 4 of the 10 points on offer. However, victories at Home to Long Ashton (65 - 40) and away at Greenbank (63 - 55) gave them a further 16 points. In last weeks game at home against a spirited Weston (Bath) side, the Saints recorded a 54 - 45 victory, giving them a further 7 points to cement their fourth place in the league with 83 Points from the 14 games played - they are currently           10 points ahead of Olveston (last years Champions) who are 5th, and with only 4 games to go The Saints (who are only 12 points behind the league leaders GB Brittons) are on course for their best finish in recent years.

The Bristol & District side are also in the Semi Final of the Lloyd Trophy which will be played at Bristol Arrow on Tuesday August 21st at 18.00hrs - so why not come along and support the Saints.

North East League - Division Two

The North East League side are also on course for a return to Division One at the first attempt. They currently head the table 31 points ahead of SLAT who are in second place. With only 4 games to go they currently only need 10 points to return as Champions - this could be achieved this week (Thursday August 2nd) with a victory over Bristol Arrow at Derby Road.

Gloucestershire County League 

Our B Team, playing for the first time this season in the Gloucestershire County League have returned with 10 points from their last two games. Having sealed a 4 - 2 victory away at Frampton on Severn, they returned from another away game at Caer Glow with a very impressive 6 - 0 victory. This was done on a day when 17 playing members were playing Avonmouth in the Semi Final of the Clarence Davy Plate - So our Congratulations go to everyone involved !

County Cup Two Rink

Bristol St Andrews and two other Bristol sides ( Greenbank & Olveston) have reached the County Cup Semi Finals to be held this year at Tetbury B C on Sunday August 19th. BSA will play Greenbank in one of the semi finals. The Final will also be played on the same day.


Following wins against both Ardagh & Bristol St George, Bristol St Andrews are now through to the Regional Semi Final of the Gloucester County Cup. This is to be played at Derby Road on August 7th - their opponents are at present areunknown



Bristol St Andrews welcomed another new member in July as Sue Taylor who lives locally joined the club. I'm sure that everyone will join me in welcoming Sue to the club - and it would appear that not only is the new club signage working, but our dream of reintroducing a Bristol St Andrews Ladies team into the league next season is getting a real possibility.

JULY 2018
WELCOME TO 3 NEW MEMBERS - June saw the arrival of 3 new members who join us from other clubs. Keith Boyland has joined us from Olveston, and Richard Haynes and his son Charlie join us from Bristol Arrow. 

ISLE OF WIGHT TOUR: A party of 33 members, partners and friends of the club left for a tour of the island. In extremely warm conditions they returned unbeaten in the 3 games played during their stay.

ELECTRIC STAIRLIFT IS NOW WORKING: The club have now had an electric stairlift fitted to the clubhouse main staircase. This will now make it easier for visitors with limited mobility to enter our clubhouse.

End of Season Tournament - Fully Booked : The Bristol St Andrews "End of Season Open Fours Tournament" is now fully booked. This years tournament which takes place on Sunday September 30th, and has proved extremely popular again this year with the 24 places being snapped up record time. With total prize money of £320 plus the Derek Sharpe Memorial Trophy being presented to the winners - another full day of competitive bowling is expected. The tournament draw will take place in August - further details to follow.
